As I began to write, I knew it was more opinionated than data-driven. There are a lot of differing opinions about concrete floors. Some people love them while some people hate them.

The main reason is that concrete can be either polished like marble or rough like pebbles and cobblestones. The cost of these installations is also all over the board. Some will believe that concrete floors are inexpensive and easy to install. Others would argue that they're expensive and say they're difficult to install correctly.

  • Durability: Concrete is one of the most durable materials available for floors, and polished concrete can last for more than a century with proper maintenance. It can customize any design to fit and look like any other flooring material. Both residential and commercial buildings can use concrete floors, and its beautiful and easy to clean.
  • Low cost: Polished concrete is one of the least expensive options for flooring, making it an affordable choice for homeowners who want a high-quality flooring solution at a lower price.
  • Versatility: Polished concrete is available in a wide range of colours and textures, allowing you to choose the look that best matches your home's decor style or design goals.
  • Types of flooring: When you're building your home, you have many different options when it comes to flooring. You can choose a wood floor, a tile floor, or even a laminate floor if you want something that looks similar to wood but is easier to maintain.

Aside from the advantages, there are also disadvantages that we will discuss below:

  • Concrete floors tend to be cold and uncomfortable underfoot in most climates, especially in winter. So if you live where there are extreme temperatures throughout the year. Then this may not be the best option for your home. You will also need someone with experience installing concrete floors so that everything lines up well before drying completely.
  • Concrete floors are firm and durable. But they're also cold and hard.
  • You can add a layer of flooring to make the concrete feel more like wood or tile, but that will increase the installation cost.
  • It may be susceptible to moisture damage if not properly sealed.
  • Concrete floors are durable and inexpensive options for the home. They're easy to clean and maintain and install in any room. However, concrete floors can be cold and hard on bare feet. If you have pets, they might leave paw prints on your floor that can be difficult to remove.

My conclusion is that polished concrete floors give the look of hardwood floors at a fraction of the price. They are durable with no scratch, dry out, or sag, and they won't dent easily or chip. A polished floor is a viable option for living rooms, dining rooms, hallways and even kitchens.

Polished concrete, also known as acid-stained concrete, acid-wash concrete is a choice for a wide variety of residential uses. It's superb for houses on stilts or with less-than-perfect foundations. It works well in areas that see harsh or extreme weather conditions. Also, it is a good choice for coastal areas since it's salt-resistant and low maintenance.

Although there are trade-offs either way, if you're considering concrete floors for your home, you have to weigh the pros and cons before making a choice. Don't rush in; consider what factors will be most important to you, and decide from there which option best suits your needs. Whether you choose polished concrete, stained concrete or acid-stained concrete, the decision is yours.
